By John Downes

West Ham drew 3-3 at Peterborough in their opening pre-season run-out of the season, with new manager Slaven Bilic taking charge of his team for the first time.

After leading 3-1 in the 23rd minute, after a frenetic start in Cambridgeshire in which they went one behind, West Ham threw away their lead, conceding again in the 39th and 60th minute - the latter from the penalty spot.

However, with the Hammers making nine changes immediately after Posh's goal on the hour mark, with Development Squad and Academy players replacing more renowned first XI players, the game fizzled out, with West Ham now looking to their Europa League second qualifying round home tie against Maltese side Birkirkara, on Thursday.

Having left academy coach Terry Westley in charge of West Ham's first qualifying round Europa League tie with Lustianos, Bilic took to the dugout for the first time for the Irons.

And it was not the best of starts for the Croatian as in the eighth minute Peterborough won a corner, which was sent into the box and met brilliantly by their 20-year-old, 6ft 5in Portuguese centre back Ricardo Almeida Santos, as he powered home a header.

However, just four minutes later the Hammers replied, as stalwarts Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble combined expertly, with the latter tucking home neatly in the 12th minute.

After a bizarre passage of play just a minute later Bilic's men had the lead as ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Ben Alnwick dwelt on the ball for too long, with his kick cannoning in off Senegalese striker Diafra Sakho who chased down well.

Sakho looked sharp in the match, clearly keen to atone for his red card on Thursday night away at Lustianos.

A goal from former Manchester City trainee Martin Samuelsen followed for West Ham in the 23rd minute, and they looked to be cruising but Dave Robertson's side pegged back the Premier League team in the 39th minute.

A disjointed Hammers backline allowed for 22-year-old Jon Taylor to break the off-side trap and round goalkeeper Adrian to finish, after a through ball from Michael Bostwick.

Noble then went from hero to villain on the hour mark as he brought down Posh's young midfielder Marcus Maddison in the box, with Bostwick drilling home the resulting penalty to tie the game at 3-3.

Wholesale changes from both sides then ensued almost instantaneously after the penalty hit the back of the net, with Aaron Cresswell the only man left on the pitch from the West Ham starters, as he interestingly moved into a central midfield position.

Bilic (left) issued instructions to his West Ham players during the match, including goalkeeper Adrian (right)

After the match Bilic gave his thoughts to West Ham's club website: 'It is always good to see the strikers get among the goals.

'It is good for their confidence to keep scoring goals and we have to add more goals from midfield than we scored last year.

'That was missing and we cannot just rely on strikers.

'It is very important that people like Mark, Pedro, Kevin score their share of goals.

'It was good for the first game.

'We didn't want to give the guys from the first-team more than 60 minutes.

'But we did okay and it was good training.'

Samuelsen delighted to take Posh chance

Thursday’s UEFA Europa League tie at Lusitans gave several of West Ham United’s youngsters the chance to impress, and it was another of the Development Squad starlets who caught the eye at Peterborough United on Saturday.

Norway youth international Martin Samuelsen was a summer arrival from Manchester City and the 18-year-old marked his first game in Claret and Blue with a goal as the Hammers drew 3-3 in their first pre-season friendly.

Playing as part of a front three with Diafra Sakho and Modibo Maiga, Samuelsen was a lively presence and he was thrilled to grab his opportunity with both hands.

“I was really happy to get this chance so early, and with getting a goal it couldn’t have been better,” he beamed.

“For the goal, I just got the ball and did what I do in training, tucked it away in the bottom corner.

“I was close to scoring earlier too when the goalkeeper touched my shot onto the post. That was just unlucky.

“I think I did some good things in the game, but it was the first game of the season and I got really tired, so there were some silly errors but it’s just about getting the fitness at this stage.

“Playing in front of the West Ham fans was amazing, I didn’t expect so many of them to come down today.

“I didn’t expect to get this opportunity this quickly, but I was really happy when he called out my name for the starting team and I hope to get more chances now.”

Samuelsen’s first couple of weeks with the Hammers has been spent with the first team, as he was part of the group which travelled to train in Ireland, and he is already feeling the benefits of being around the senior players.

He added: “It was fantastic to be away with the first team group in Cork. I learned a lot from the senior players and got to know them better, so it was a good trip.

“Playing with Diafra and Modibo in the front three was a brilliant experience – they’re great players so they make it easy for me. I know where they are and they have good movement. It’s a good connection.

“It looks like it’s going to be a good season for us. We have a good squad and it seems like a good group.

“I can only hope that I’m involved in the Europa League game on Thursday, but if I’m not I’ll be supporting the boys playing.”

West Ham enter race for Juventus' Tottenham-linked Fernando Llorente

West Ham are reported to have joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Juventus striker Fernando Llorente.

Chris Linnell

According to Gazetta dello Sport, West Ham United have entered the race for Tottenham-linked centre-forward Fernando Llorente, will the 30-year-old set to leave Turin this summer.

Llorente played third-fiddle for the Old Lady last season, with Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez seen as Massimiliano Allegri's key men in attack, and the recent acquisitions of Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic appear to have confirmed the Spaniard's fate.

The player's brother and agent, Jesus, recently told Portuguese paper O Jogo: "Fernando wants to be playing regularly so that he doesn't lose his place in the Spain national team. Nothing can be excluded."

It has not been the most fruitful of spells for Llorente since leaving Athletic Bilbao for the Serie A champions. Despite playing well for Juventus, he has never quite been able to push on to the next level during his time in Turin.

The Spaniard, who has scored seven goals in 23 international appearances, is strong in the air and can play as a traditional number nine, or in a front-two pairing, which makes him a suitable target for either Tottenham or West Ham.

Amid speculation in the Daily Mail linking the Hammers' Diafra Sakho with an exit, Llorente could find playing time easier to come by at Upton Park. Whereas at Spurs, he would be forced to compete for first-team royalties with Harry Kane, who produced the form of his life last season.
